Top 10 Most Common Internet Marketing Jargon

All industries have their own unique language, the jargon of this particular industry – Internet Marketing – is no different. There are many unusual terms and names in Internet marketing and if you aren’t familiar what these Internet marketing terms, it can be very confusing at times.

In this article I will provide you with a brief description of some of the most common Internet marketing terms and what they mean. That way you will have an easier time learning the basic skills you need to make money online instead of feeling like you were just dropped off in some strange foreign land! It’s vitally important to understand the basic terms first before moving on.

These are the top 10 most common terms you are most likely to hear a lot online. Of course you won’t be able to go over all of them straight away yourself to practise, but it will give you just an idea to start getting familiar with these terms.

1. Hosting and Domain
These terms are often confused. If you need a website up and running you need hosting, a webhosting company will provide you space on their servers. If you want to give your website a name, you need to have a domainname. It’s really that simple. Why should you need your own website? This way you’re in complete control of your own products and site name. There are hosting companies where you can easily start but it will not be your own hosting name, but your domain name is added to their main site, and it’s something like…..xxxxxx.com/myownwebsite.com. It is something to consider if you’re serious in starting your own business (while the traffic is going to their site as well) that your own uploading files/products are not legally yours anymore as you’re uploading it all under someone else’s company! If your host is out of business…you are too! So choose carefully. Preferable start with a solid hosting company name that has great customer support, so you can ask for help if needed.

2. C-Panel Hosting
The C stands for Control Panel, this is your hosting dashboard where you can be in charge of your own actions and an overview of your hosting/website building possibilities and is provided by only the best hosting companies.

3. FTP
This means File Transport Protocol, it’s a way you can upload or download files from your computer to your hosting account. You can start with a free one like Filezilla.

4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
This is simply a way to optimize your website content and articles that you write so the search engines will find them. In order to do this you find one keyword to target for each piece of content and that is what you optimize for.

5. Long Tail Keywords
These are the words or phrases people search for in Google search when looking for something online. For example, if I were looking for information on “how to train my dog” I would probably type in the keyword “how to train a dog” that is considered a long tailed keyword since it has several words in it. You can extend the sentence with: how to train a dog in New York, for example.

6. Pay Per Click (PPC)
This is a method for getting targeted traffic (people who are really interested in what you are talking about) to your website. You place an add targeting a certain group of keywords.
When someone does a search online for that keyword, your ad (hopefully) will show up at the top of the page. When they click on it they will go to your site. You are only charged when someone clicks on your ad and not just when it shows up. You have to know what you’re doing, while you could lose a lot of money using this method and this method is also a bit outdated by other profitable strategies like Facebook marketing ads, CPA Marketing or Ad Swaps.

7. CPA Marketing means Cost-Per Action marketing
This way you’ll get paid a percentage if someone clicks on the ad or form that you are advertising on your site. To step into this kind of marketing, you need a website that is generating traffic and visitors who will actually see that ad. Therefore you need to get approved by the major advertising companies that are providing those ads. It is difficult to be accepted, while ofcourse they have there own standards to accept people, but it’s not impossible and not the end of the world if you’ve been rejected once. Just continue to get a good website up and running that generates a lot of traffic, try again and contact them. I have several video courses to learn more about CPA Marketing to get you started. CPA Marketing is a different approach than affiliate marketing, where you market other people’s products.

8. Autoresponder
This is an automated system where you can create a webform, add it to your website and when people sign up (which means they are giving you permission to send them emails according to anti-spam laws that are valid in most countries) the follow up email messages that you have added to the autoresponder will go out automatically. This is called: “opt-in”. Ofcourse, people also can “opt-out” and not receiving anymore messages from you. This way you build a list of followers/subscribers that is up-to-date and eager to read your messages as “your “audience” for the products or services you want to let them know about. This is often called among Internet marketers: “the money is in the list”, while your loyal followers are the one that are willing to buy products from you too, at least…if you’re offering fresh and interesting content/products.

9. Listbuilding
Through the autoresponder, an automated email system, you’ll get a list of people’s names who are really interested in your service or product. When more people are subscribing to your list, you “build” yourself a list of names. This list contains people who want to know more of your service and you’ll keep them informed on a regular basis what’s going on in your business and about your latest news. This way you can interact with your readers who might be potential buyers of your products or services.

10. Squeeze Page (also called a capture page or landing page)
This is a page that has only one purpose and that is to get people to opt-in or sign up to your email list. They either sign up or they leave. There is nothing else to do on this page and no navigation to allow them access to other pages of your site. You just want them to be part of your list to keep people informed.

This list is obviously not long, but hopefully I’ve covered some of the most common, and confusing, terms around – if you’re complete new to all the terms of Internet Marketing.
